I jerked up right in bed. A bead of sweat fell from my forehead and I breathed quick, ragged breaths. It was only a dream. I had been in a van. The van was speeding, going way too, fast. It was dangerous. There was a man and a woman in the front driving, and a baby in the backseat unsafely strapped in. The baby was screaming at the top of her little lungs as the mother tried to comfort her. She was scared though, the mother, and she couldn't calm the baby. The father made a sharp turn and in an instant the baby flew out of the van. That's when I jolted awake. To the mothers screaming voice.
I was horrified. It was such a detailed dream. It felt as if it was portraying me. Impossible I thought. My parents died a month after I was born. I didn't even know what they looked like.
I pulled the sheets off me and winced as my feet touched the cold floor. I stood up and my steps echoed across the walls as I padded to the window. The other girls in the orphanage were to heavy of sleepers to hear me.
I slid the window open. It creaked as I heaved it upwards. It was a twenty feet drop to the ground. If I could just get to the branch I could escape, but it was not a thought I had considered.
I heard the faint moan of a step from the stairway in the hall and it immediately caught my attention. It wasn't an old set of stairs so I wondered how it might have creaked. Another squeak, and another. Someone was defiantly coming. I thought about going back to my bed, but I wouldn't make it. I stood there and waited to be caught by the head mistress.
The door slowly opened and I could make out the silhouette of someone standing in the doorway. No wait... There were three people standing there. They stepped more into the room and the moon light shone across their faces. A tall man, in the front, looked angry. His beard was ruffled up a bit and there was a dark stain on his shirt that looked fresh.
The other two looked similar except the one on the left was a woman. My instincts told me to run, but I held for a bit longer. "Who are you?" I asked them. "That's for us to know now, and you to know later. You need to come with us Miss. Jay." His tone of voice set me on ease and that's all I needed to get the adrenaline I needed to jump out the window and onto the branch.
All three rushed to the window and started shouting. "You just made your first mistake Ameilia! You shouldn't run from us!" The wind picked up and dragged out his words. They sounded more like a threat. I climbed across the branch until I got to the main trunk. I went down a little further, then jumped to the ground and took off in a full out sprint.
A spotlight beamed down and gates rose from the ground. Head mistress ran out onto the porch and hollered for me. "Ameilia stop! You don't understand!" That's exactly why I ran though, because I had no idea what was going on. I got past the gates, but once I reached the tree line I knew instantly I wouldn't make it. There was a tall, dark man only a little ways behind me. I started running again. Tree branches snagging my clothes, scratching my face. I tripped over a root and I did a face plant into the dirt. I whipped around as the man leaned down and bashed something solid into my head. I hit the ground and blood welled up in my mouth. I coughed it out and wiped the blood that was trickling from my cheek.
The man grabbed me and hoisted me over his shoulder. I had no fight left in me. I was out of breath from the run. I had probably made it a good two thousand meters out. We broke through the tree line and we were instantly swarmed by people. I flinched as a needle was jabbed into my arm. Ice cold liquid coursed through my veins and it was agonizingly painful. They laid me down on a stretcher in the back of a van. They tightened straps around me and made sure I couldn't move. As we began to drive the pain hit me full on.
I thrashed and kicked and my head swung back and forth. My blood felt as if it was on fire and I tried everything in my power to hold back the screams. I clenched and unclenched my fists trying to subside the pain, but it only intensified. Then it backed off dramatically. I lay there in a sweaty heap ready for it to be over, but it wasn't. It suddenly rushed back all at once and my heart burst into flames. I screamed out in agony as the cold liquid reached my heart. Then though, the world started fading. It all went black and I was out. Now there was complete silence, though no peace. The dream came back.
The undercover becomes uncovered.
