The lights dimmed a little and everyone fell silent. The assembly was now beginning. Mrs. Hut, the headmistress walked to the front of the room. "Some of you know what's in store this year and others of you don't. I must inform you first and foremost that your parents know about the true history of this school and have their own reasons for sending you here." I turned to see if Amber was just as confused as I was. She looked at me back and gave me the look. She, too, had no idea what she meant.
Mrs. Hut continued. "You are not just normal students. You are children of agents. You have been moved here to become part of our elite force. Everything you learn here is for your ears only. You may not tell your parents anything." She looked straight at me and gave a sympathetic nod. She knew my father was gone. The entire cafeteria was dead silent. Including me. "Some of you will carry out your years working for our technological department, whereas a few selection of you will be trained as field agents."
I was still in shock about finding out about being an agent in training, but I started hoping that I wouldn't be in the technological department. I knew nothing about that kind of stuff. Mrs. Hut smiled and then continued. I would like to introduce you to our field agents. She pulled a list out of her pocket and cleared her throat. "Triston Yaites! Elizabeth Mason! Dillian Gates! Jacie Biggs! Archer Pranton! Melissa Saint Peters! Daniel Elmore! Josh Hut! Amber Denton!" My heart was racing. Please, please say my name. "And finally," She gave a moment of pause, "Ameilia Jay!" My jaw dropped. Amber turned to me squealing in delight. "Omigawd AJ that's you!" She was smiling ear to ear now.
I looked to my left and met Josh's eye. He winked and turned his attention back to Mrs. Hut, his mother. "Thank you everyone for attending this assembly you may now go back to your dorms." She walked off and everyone started getting up to leave. Amber had to pull me up and escort me back to our room. Once she shut the door I let everything out. "Amber this is insane! We are an elite spy school of some sorts! This makes so much sense now! My father was an agent. He must have been." I was pacing back and forth now. "Amber we're going to be field agents." I know I had just met her, but I could tell she was going to be my best friend. Amber grabbed my arms and started jumping. I jumped with her and started screaming. "Omigawd this is so exciting!!!!"
There was a knock on our door and we went silent immediately. I straightened my skirt and walked to the door and opened it. Josh leaned in the door frame with his hair tasseled. "Could you please keep it down? Some of us our trying to go to sleep here." I blushed, feeling embarrassed that he had heard our screaming. "Oh yeah, uhm, sorry." He went back into his own room and I shut our door.
Amber was smiling and rocking back and forth. "You like him." She said in a matter of fact tone. "I do not." My face resumed its normal color and I turned off the light and climbed into bed. I really didn't like him. "I think he's arrogant and way to full of himself." I pulled the covers up around me.
Amber yawned and I heard her roll over in her bed. "Whatever AJ, see you in the morning." I closed my eyes and imagined what my classes would be like. Most our classes were the same as the other students, but S.D. (special defense) and F.E. (field expedition) were different.
I fell asleep dreaming about my father and when I woke, the imagine I had concurred vanished. I threw the covers off me and started changing into my day clothes. Light was streaming in through the window so I figured it wasn't necessary to turn the light on. I stood up after pulling on my socks and walked to the door where my shoes were. I slipped them on and decided to flip on the light. Amber rolled over and blinked at the light. "Good morning." She said all groggily. "Get up Amber breakfast is in ten minutes." At the word breakfast she was on her feet slipping her uniform on. She was ready in three minutes and we headed out the door with our shoulder bags.
Inside my bag I had my special defense clothes, tennis shoes, notebooks, and two or three pencils. I assumed Amber's held the same. I tucked my schedule into my pocket and hoisted my bag higher on my shoulder. We got our food in the cafeteria and sat where we had last night. The food was delicious; bowl of fresh, juicy fruit, perfectly toasted toast, and a glass of some kind of purple liquid.
We finished and went straight to our first class, getting there five minutes early. We had S.A. (skills assessment) first. I took the seat nest to Amber and waited for it to begin. I learned that Mrs. Gilgory couldn't possibly make the class any less interesting. The second the bell sounded for our next class me and Amber were out of our seats and racing for the S.D. building outside.
We went into the locker room and changed into our workout clothes and slipped on our tennis shoes. We were out in the gym with a minute to spare. Everyone stood crowded together in front of Mrs. Jessie who was supposed to be our defense coach. I looked around at the other student agents. I caught a glimpse of Josh just before Mrs. Jessie started talking. His clothes clung to his body making him look muscular. I ignored the thought that was pressing in the back of my mind.
"Alright young agents I'm pairing you up boy girl. Triston with Elizabeth, Dillian with Jacie, Daniel with Melissa, Archer with Amber, and Josh with Ameilia." Of course, I thought. Of all people I have to be put with Josh. Amber looked at me and could see the anger welling up, but luckily didn't say anything. "Find a mat and listen up. Does anyone in here go by something else?" "I go by Lizze!" Elizabeth shouted. "And I go by AJ." I said not yelling like Lizzie. I walked to the mat that Josh was standing at and refused to make eye contact until absolutely necessary. "I am aware that most of you have little experience so I paired you accordingly. A two year student with a one year student. Your partner will show you defenses one, two, and three. Please get started."
Its time I thought, I have to look at him. I looked up and noticed he was already watching me. "Ready for defense one?" He asked. "Sure, why not."  I replied. "Alright then come at me." He looked at me intensely and I realized he expected me to charge him. "Just do it AJ, don't be a baby." I ran at him at a slow pace and to my dismay I didn't realize he was going to attack me. He was fast and in an instant he was behind me with his arm wrapped around my throat. I reached up, grabbed his arm and twisted it behind him. I let go and waited to see anger when he turned around. He was smiling.
"Now you know one and two. You're a fast learner." He then jumped forward grabbing my arm and using it to maneuver himself around to my other side. He slid his leg between my feet and swept it to the right dropping me to the ground. I flipped over and then he was on top of me with one knee in my ribcage. The air was knocked out of me and I was panting.
He leaned in, his face inches from my face. I could feel his breath on my cheek. Anger welled up in my eyes and he could see it. The only feeling I had was the searing pain in my chest. He stood up and offered a hand. That one gesture through me over the edge. I smacked his hand aside and got to my feet. "What the hell was that?" I spat at him. He threw his hands up in mock defense. "Just making sure you didn't get too cocky, to soon." He smiled and I felt a laugh in my throat. I tried to fend it off, but it bubbled over and soon we were both laughing.
I stopped laughing and wiped the tears from my eyes. "Alright everyone, get changed." Mrs. Jessie yelled out. I walked over to my locker room without saying bye to Josh. Amber ran in and grabbed my shoulders. "AJ I love my partner! Archer is so sweet and funny!" I raised an eyebrow at her and she blushed. "Well lucky you." I said flatly. "She poked me in the side. "Hey, I saw you and Josh laughing at your mat." I shrugged. "I still think he's a jerk. All possibility of liking someone vanishes when they jam their knee into your ribcage." She gasped. "Why would he do that?" Again, I shrugged. "Defense three. He didn't take it easy on me." I pulled on my uniform shirt and headed out the door with my bag. Amber scurried after me.
"That seems harsh. It really sucks you don't like him though. You know, considering he's in all of your classes except G.E. (girl etiquette)." I frowned at that realization. "Oh yeah." We walked to F.E. class in silence. We walked into class and unfortunately we were seated boy girl at each table. Even worse I sat next to Josh. He smiled when I sat down. "Well isn't this ironic." I could tell he didn't care for a remark. So I stayed silent and looked up at the front of the room where Mr. Chance stood, ready to give a lecture.
AJ realizes how much she dislikes the really hot Josh. Lucky for her though she doesnt want to develop in feelings for him anyways. She knows she would only get her heart broken.
