My phone vibrated again, another text from Jared. I didn't want to answer him, though.  I have isolated myself in my room for two weeks now. My friends bring me my homework and take it to school for me. I don't want anyone to see me. I wear sunglasses all day long now. I don't want to be questioned and I don't want to be stared at. I can't stand it.
Just then my mom walked in. "Honey I'm worried about you. You have been stuck in here for long enough now." I turn away and hold the blankets up higher, bringing it to my chin. "And please take those sunglasses off. It's ridiculous. You're not even outside!" She threw her hands up, irritated with my resistance to do what she asks. "I'm fine mom. Just… please leave me alone." She walks over and tears the glasses from my face. "Hey!" I shout reaching after them, realizing a moment too late that we made eye contact.
She gasps, dropping the glasses and taking a step back. My eyes weren't that bright for a reaction do dramatic as hers. I got up and walked to my mirror. My mouth gaped in astonishment. They were glowing. Light was actually protruding from them.
"You're….." My mom started to say something, but stopped. "Mom I don't know it just-" She held up her hand and cut me off. "What are you on!?" She asks her voice shaky. "What!? Nothing! I promise! I don't know." I stutter my words. "Don't lie to me." She says voice now stern.
"Y-you don't believe me?" I was shocked. "Of course not!" She retorts back. Something in me triggers. It tells me to run. That's what I did, too. I ran from that room and into the night air.
I sprinted down the road heading straight for Jared's house.
I ran through his door and almost crashed into him. He was standing there, about to walk out. "Ally, what going on?" He asks seeking my eyes for an answer. His expression immediately changes when I look him in the eyes. "I need help." I manage to choke out. He embraces me in a hug, but I pull away. "I came to say bye.  I have a feeling that I'm not... good anymore."  I struggle for words to say. I turn away about to walk out the door, into the rain that just started to pour. He grabs my hand. "Don't go." He whispers. I yank my arm and run out the door. I get to the tree line and I'm about to go into the woods when I sense him behind me.  She's not supposed to know. I'm running out of time. I turn around and look at him. "What am I not supposed to know?" Surprise is the look I get in return. "How'd you-" He doesn't finish his sentence. Instead he looks me straight in the eyes. It's too early. You aren't ready. Please just come back. "No!" I say when I realize he didn't tell me by speaking. "I'm a freak! You need to leave me!" He reaches out and gently touches my cheek.
"You are not a freak." Again, he pulls me too him refusing to let me out of his grasp. I look up at him. He leans down and kisses my lips. A warm tingly sensation fills me. I pull away and shake my head. I turn to leave when I stop dead. I'm dry… how? It's not possible! Confusion fills me and I have a gut wrenching pain in my stomach.
Once again Jared tries to grab my arm, but before he does I run as hard as I can into the woods. "Ally!? Ally? Wait!" Jared crashes through the trees thick foliage calling for me. I don't answer. I run deeper into the woods not wanting him to see the changes that are occurring.
